Two 4-H youths from Ellis County qualified and participated in the State Fair’s Big Tex Youth Livestock Auction on Friday, Oct. 7.
Only 470 exhibitors out of about 3,000 qualify for the auction.
Elizabeth Norwood, 15, of Midlothian won reserve champion for Heavyweight Black/Red Cross with her steer “Blaze.”
Norwood described “Blaze” as “super sweet and calm” and said his favorite snack is shavings.
Since third grade, Norwood has shown animals. She reserved at the Austin rodeo last year and has won two or three breeds at the fair in the past.
“I was so excited, but I was also very nervous,” Norwood said about her win to qualify in the auction. “I came off a win in Austin and faced the same judge here. I was nervous to see how he would place me since I won with him.”
Aubrey Hanna, 13, of Waxahachie won class champion for Class 26 Other Cross with her pig “3D.”
He is named “3D” because he has three dewclaws. Hanna said she and “3D” have similar personalities.
“We’re very picky and kind of bougie and have to have certain things to make us happy,” Hanna said.
Hanna has been showing for four years, but this is her first win at the State Fair.
“I was excited to win because the last two years I have not done very good (at the fair),” Hanna said.
According to the State Fair of Texas, those who qualify for the auction sell their animal to the highest bidder. Beforehand, the students are given a maximum payment for their animal with the excess proceeds donated to the Big Tex Youth Livestock Auction and Scholarship Program. This year, the auction raised about $1.9 million.
