In April, downtown Waxahachie will once again be a filming location for the upcoming TV show, “Bass Reeves,” a “Yellowstone” project and “1883” spin-off.
Set in 1875, “Bass Reeves” will star David Oyelowo and Dennis Quaid and tell the story of the first Black deputy U.S. marshal west of the Mississippi River, according to IMDb.
The show will film again at the Rogers Hotel and the Ellis County Courthouse on April 10-11, with preparations beginning April 5 and restoration ending about April 13.
The Waxahachie City Council approved closing parking spaces in the inner ring of the courthouse square and closing the 100 blocks of S. Rogers and W. Main streets during its meeting March 6.
The Ellis County Commissioners Court approved a contract to allow “Bass Reeves” filming within the historic Ellis County Courthouse during its meeting March 7.
Cherie Batsel, assistant county and district attorney, explained that it will be a quicker preparation process within the courthouse than when they filmed in February because the light fixtures and the benches were left behind in the justice of the peace courtroom by the crew.
For this round of filming, all four exterior doors of the courthouse will be locked, and the basement will be used as the public entrance for official county business, County Judge Todd Little said.
The cast and crew previously filmed scenes for “Bass Reeves” in downtown Waxahachie on Feb. 13-14. Filming took place in the county judge’s office, the JP courtroom and a clerk’s office. It was not confirmed if all three locations will be used again, but filming will take place in the JP courtroom.
