During its June 5 meeting, Waxahachie City Council unanimously approved the addition of a left turn lane at the intersection of Northgate Drive and U.S. Highway 77, near RaceTrac and Coleman Junior High School.

“This is to have a left turn lane if you were going westbound towards 77,” James Gaertner, director of public works and engineering, said. “Right now, basically all three other legs of that intersection have a (left) turn lane, (but) for some reason this intersection does not.”

Along with the approval of a left-turn lane, council approved an engineering professional services agreement with Teague Nall and Perkins Inc. in the amount of $122,521. The agreement includes “the design, bidding and construction phase engineering services and easement preparation services for this project,” according to the city staff report.

With the addition of the lane, the road will need to be widened, and the sidewalk and traffic signals will need to be relocated. Gaertner said the city received a letter of support from the Waxahachie ISD board last year for right of way allocation for the project.
