During its June 13 meeting, the Ellis County Commissioners Court unanimously approved an amendment to the county’s animal control ordinance, section 2.1, pertaining to rabies vaccinations.

The amendment changes the duration a rabies vaccination is valid from one year to three years.

“The owner of each dog or car shall have the dog or cat vaccinated against rabies by the time it is 4 months of age and within each subsequent 12-month interval thereafter or according to the maximum labeled duration of immunity for the most recently administered vaccine (either one or three years),” the ordinance reads.

Sheriff Brad Norman explained to the court that rabies vaccinations can now be administered in three-year intervals instead of only one-year intervals. The amendment covers both vaccination intervals.

“Our citizens are having to explain themselves to our animal control officers, who are saying but my vaccination is good for three years, but our county policy says it has to be done every year,” Norman said. “This fixes that.”
