During its April 3 meeting, the Waxahachie City Council unanimously approved a specific use permit that would bring Dutch Bros Coffee, a national coffee chain, to Waxahachie, located at 1995 North U.S. Highway 77.

Dutch Bros Coffee offers handcrafted specialty coffee, teas, smoothies, freezes and energy drinks. According to the city staff report, Dutch Bros was founded in 1992 in Oregon and now has more than 500 locations in 13 states.

The 950-square foot Dutch Bros Coffee will have no indoor seating and limited outdoor seating. Customers place their orders through a walk-up window or the drive-thru, which will have two lanes with 14 total stacking spaces. Instead of a speaker box for drive-thru ordering, broistas, Dutch Bros’ version of baristas, take orders with an iPad to personalize the experience.

“I think what you’ll find is … we interact with the people coming through the drive-thru,” Tony Scardino, construction project manager with Dutch Bros Coffee, had said during the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission’s March 28 meeting. “That’s one of the things that makes us very special. If you’re having a bad day or something’s going on, come by Dutch and tell people your story, and we’ll stop, and we’ll talk to you, and we’ll try to make your day a better day.”

There will be no direct access to the site from Highway 77, with entrances found on Victory Drive and North Town Boulevard.

The coffee shop is anticipated to have 40 employees and to operate daily from 5 a.m.-10 p.m.

Council voted in favor of option two of the exterior design options presented. According to the city staff report, option two is “composed of a maximum of 85 percent stucco with a horizontal fiber cement accent siding, and cultured stone at the base of the building” with gray and blue colors.
