The Ellis County Commissioners Court approved the purchase of a Faro Focus Premium Laser Scanner for the Sheriff’s Office in the amount of $83,775.66, during its meeting May 30.

The laser scanner will serve as a crime scene scanner, capturing measurements of the scene in a 3D format.

Capt. Tommy Hale explained to the commissioners that the Sheriff’s Office has used this scanner in the past, borrowing it from DPS.

“It scans the crime scene as it is intact,” Hale said. “It does the measurements for it. It does it in 3D, so it makes the crime scene look a lot more real than it (looks) from just taking digital pictures and using tape measures. It’s also going to help with court presentation. When the jury sees it, if we have to go to trial on something, it’s been very effective in that manner.”

Hale said the addition of this scanner to the Sheriff’s Office will bring the “technology up to where it’s needed to be,” noting that other agencies who use this scanner have seen it “work out very well.”
