The Ellis County Commissioners Court unanimously approved the assembly of a county credit card policy committee during its meeting Sept. 30.

Commissioner Paul Perry told the court he felt the creation of a committee was the best course of action after further investigation of recent issues, and he offered to head it.

“So, we have some better coordination when we extend those credit limits, and we have some ongoing rules,” Perry said.

After reviewing the current credit card policy, Perry noticed there are rules that have fallen out of practice – ones he said should have fallen out of practice.

“The problem is, when you still have a rule on the books, then you never know when that rule might be selected to be used by somebody to embarrass someone,” Perry said.

The goal of the committee is to create a “more succinct, more down to earth” credit card policy, Perry explained.

“You mean, like the fact that if I go buy a $10 frame, I need a requisition?” County Judge Todd Little asked.

“Yes, which is not practice … and doesn’t need to be in the books,” Perry said.

Little said he was in favor of the committee and offered to join it with Perry.

Along with Perry and Little, the committee will include a representative from the purchasing department, a representative from audit and one of the county’s judicial judges.

County auditor Janet Martin told the court she would prefer to attend the first couple meetings and then assign someone from her office once “they get things on the ground.”

As the committee finalizes changes to the policy, those will be brought back to the commissioners court for its vote and approval.
