The Waxahachie City Council unanimously approved the purchase and installation of new athletic field lighting for the baseball field at Lee Penn Park during its Oct. 17 meeting.

Council authorized Musco Sports Lighting LLC to purchase and install the new lighting, which will replace the current lighting with new LED lights.

“The baseball field is the last dedicated athletic field within the parks department that incorporates the traditional ballfield lights, which are the high intensity metal halide bulbs,” Brad Barnes, assistant director of parks and recreation, said.

The new LED modern lights will also have an online remote operation function that will allow the lights to be programmed to turn on at specific times and be turned off and on remotely through the control system, Barnes explained to the council.

The total cost of the lighting will be $158,311, according to city staff.

Penn Park, located at 404 N. Getzendaner St., houses a mini sports complex with a football field, practice fields for baseball and softball, a playground and a pool.
